Mountains, gorges and stone villages: Greece walks
Greece is walking country without making a fuss about it. The mainland offers what the islands do not: mountain ridges above two thousand metres, deep gorges and stone villages that have stood on the same slopes for centuries. The Pindos range forms the spine of the country, with mountain villages like those in Zagori, where stone arch bridges carried the winters across the rivers. In the Peloponnese, the Menalon Trail runs through the mountains of Arcadia, past the Lousios gorge, fir forest and stone villages. The islands also have good paths outside the summer season, with spring flowers and walking weather well into October. Greece walks best in spring and autumn, once the summer heat has left the mountains.
