Three days along the Soča
Juliana Trail Soča is the stretch of the Juliana Trail where the river takes over. The trail itself circles the Julian Alps in sixteen stages, from Kranjska Gora back to Kranjska Gora; this trip takes the southern loop through the Soča and Bača valleys, from Bovec to Grahovo ob Bači, 60.8 kilometres in three stages.
The first day runs from Bovec to Kobarid. Above the river the path goes through woods, then along the gorge at Srpenica and over the old stone bridge where the paths to the Kozjak waterfall meet. The fall drops off a rock ledge into a cave-like hollow, and the water stays green all year.
The second day follows the Soča to Tolmin, with the river on one side or the other, then climbs over the hills to Most na Soči, where the Idrijca meets the Soča and the river widens into a lake. The third crosses the ridge between the two valleys and drops through the Bača valley to Grahovo, where the railway runs over high viaducts above the village.
The landscape is limestone and water: clear green hollows, white stones, rock walls the river has cut through and woods climbing the slopes. May and June bring the highest water, July and August cold clear days, and September turns the woods.
Practical. The route is waymarked with the red circle of the Juliana Trail. Bovec is reached by bus from Ljubljana or Nova Gorica; Grahovo ob Bači has a station on the railway through the Baška Grapa. The stages end in Kobarid, Most na Soči and Grahovo, all with beds; Bovec is where you arrive a day early. From May to October the paths are free of snow; in high summer the valley can be close and hot.
The Juliana Trail Soča is split here into 3 stages of 16 to 24 km, 61 km in total, from Bovec to Grahovo ob Bači. The stages below are a sample itinerary: in the planner you put together your own days and choose where you sleep.

Bovec - Kobarid
From Bovec the path follows the Soča down to Kobarid, first through woods above the river and then along the gorge at Srpenica. On the way you pass the Kozjak waterfall and the old stone bridge where the paths meet.
