About Mullerthal Trail
The Mullerthal Trail is not a through-route but three loops through the Mullerthal, Luxembourg's Little Switzerland: Route 1 along the Sûre to Rosport and Moersdorf, Route 2 through the rocks and beech woods north of Echternach, Route 3 around Beaufort and Larochette. Together they cover 113 kilometres.
This trip walks them in five days, sleeping in Echternach, Mullerthal and Larochette. The first day is the whole of Route 1 in one go, 34 kilometres along the Sûre and back through the woods; that is a long day, and it can be split by taking a bus back from Rosport. The second crosses the heart of the sandstone country to Mullerthal, the third returns to Echternach. The last two are Route 3, with Beaufort and Larochette castles.
The landscape is sandstone: narrow gorges with ladders and steps, beech woods on the plateaus and the Sûre with vineyards to the east. It is not high mountain, but the paths are narrow and slippery after rain.
Practical. The route is 113 kilometres with 3,000 metres of climbing. The route is waymarked with the Mullerthal Trail logo. Echternach and Mullerthal are twelve kilometres apart and linked by bus; Larochette has a bus stop. April to October are the best months.
Stages Mullerthal Trail
The Mullerthal Trail is split here into 5 stages of 13 to 37 km, 113 km in total, from Echternach to Müllerthal (Route 3). The stages below are a sample itinerary: in the planner you put together your own days and choose where you sleep.
Echternach - Echternach (Route 1)
The whole of Route 1 in one day: east along the Sûre, past the vineyards and over the dike to Rosport and Moersdorf, then back through woods and fields to Echternach. A long day, with the river never far away.
Echternach - Müllerthal (Route 2)
The heart of the sandstone country: narrow gorges with ladders and steps, beech woods on the plateaus, and via Berdorf and Consdorf to Mullerthal.
Müllerthal - Echternach (Route 2)
The short way back through the woods, with the towers of Echternach above the trees early on.
Müllerthal - Larochette (Route 3)
Through the gorges to Beaufort castle, then over the heights to Larochette, with its castle above the valley.
Larochette - Müllerthal (Route 3)
The last day winds back through the woods to Mullerthal, past the Hallerbach rocks and the stream valleys.
