Three days over the ridge
The Pieterpad (LAW 9) runs 498 kilometres from Pieterburen in Groningen to the Sint-Pietersberg near Maastricht. This route is the Salland section: from Ommen via Hellendoorn and Holten to Laren, 51 kilometres in three stages.
The first day runs from the bridge in Ommen along the Vecht and through the meadows to Hellendoorn. The second climbs the Sallandse Heuvelrug, with heath and juniper, and drops to Holten. The third runs over the Holterberg and through the woods to Laren.
The landscape is river valley, heath and forest: the Vecht with its floodplains, the open heath of the ridge and the spruce woods of the Holterberg. The elevation is modest and the paths are sand and grass.
Practical. The route is waymarked red and white. Ommen has a station on the Zwolle to Emmen line; Laren is connected by bus to Deventer, which has a station. The stages end in Hellendoorn and Holten, where there is a hotel and an estate hotel. August and September are the best months, when the heather flowers.
The Pieterpad Salland is split here into 3 stages of 15 to 21 km, 51 km in total, from Ommen to Laren. The stages below are a sample itinerary: in the planner you put together your own days and choose where you sleep.

From the bridge in Ommen you follow the Vecht out of the valley, then cross meadows and small woods to Hellendoorn, with the ridge on the horizon.
