Three days above the Rhine
The Rheinburgenweg runs 200 kilometres along the left bank of the Rhine, from Bingen to Rolandseck near Bonn, past castles, vineyards and the gorge of the Middle Rhine. This route is the middle part: from Rhens via Bad Salzig and St. Goar to Oberwesel, 44 kilometres in three stages.
The first day climbs from the Königsstuhl at Rhens into the woods and runs high above the river to Bad Salzig. The second is the longest and goes through woods and past vineyards to St. Goar, with the Loreley on the far bank. The third is short and runs over the heights to Oberwesel.
The landscape is a river valley of vineyards, oak woods and steep slate slopes, with the castles of the right bank opposite. The climbing is constant: between 450 and a thousand metres a day.
Practical. The route is waymarked with the Rheinburgenweg logo. Rhens and Oberwesel both have a station on the left-bank Koblenz to Boppard line, with two trains an hour. The stages end in Bad Salzig and St. Goar, where there are hotels. May to October are the best months; in September the grape harvest is in full swing.
The Rheinburgenweg Mittelrheintal is split here into 3 stages of 9 to 20 km, 45 km in total, from Rhens to Oberwesel. The stages below are a sample itinerary: in the planner you put together your own days and choose where you sleep.

Rhens - Bad Salzig
From the Königsstuhl at Rhens you climb into the woods and walk high above the Rhine to the south, with the castles on the far bank. At Bad Salzig you drop to the water.

Bad Salzig - St. Goar
