Four days on the ridge of the Ammergauer Alps
The Ammergauer Höhenweg is a four-day hut-to-hut trail of 36 kilometres through the Ammergau Alps, from Oberammergau to Halblech in the foothills of the Lech valley, with three overnight stays on the ridge: the August-Schuster-Haus on the Pürschling, the Brunnenkopfhütte in the old hunting grounds of King Ludwig II, and the Kenzenhütte in the Kenzen valley. The route totals just over 2,200 metres of climbing, with daily stages of 6 to 13 kilometres.
The first two days run over the Kofel above Oberammergau, the sun terrace at the Kolbensattel and the chain-secured Teufelstättkopf, with views reaching the Zugspitze on clear days. The third day is the highest: from the Brunnenkopfhütte the trail climbs to the Klammspitze, where a short chain-secured step guards the rock and the ridge narrows across the Große Klammspitz, at 1,924 metres the highest point of the crossing. After that the route softens, with grass saddles, the Kenzen waterfall and a long descent through forest to the guesthouses of Halblech and Buching; the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau lie one valley over.
Practical. Four stages of 6 to 13 kilometres look short on paper, but mountain days with 900-metre climbs and exposed rock sections take their time. The route is waymarked and easy to follow on the ridge; a head for heights is needed on the short exposed sections. Oberammergau has a railway station (RB via Murnau from Munich), so the trail works without a car. At the end, bus line RVA 73 runs from Halblech towards Steingaden and Oberammergau, and in summer the Ringbus closes the loop. Best season: mid-June to mid-October, snow permitting.
The Ammergauer Höhenweg is split here into 4 stages of 6 to 11 km, 36 km in total, from Oberammergau to Halblech. The stages below are a sample itinerary: in the planner you put together your own days and choose where you sleep.

Oberammergau - August-Schuster-Haus
The village of the Passion Play falls away below you as the Kofel, a steep limestone cone, demands hands as well as feet on its last few metres. From the summit the path drops to the Kolbensattel, where the hut terrace and the cable car mark the half-way point of the day, and a gentler climb brings you onto the open ridge of the Pürschling. The August-Schuster-Haus appears at 1,564 m with its wide sun terrace over the Ammer valley, Ettal's monastery towers in the distance, and the first hut dinner of the trip.

August-Schuster-Haus - Brunnenkopfhütte
The shortest day and a pure ridge walk. The Teufelstättkopf asks for a short pull up a secured step, then the crest rolls on over the Latschenkopf and the Laubeneck with the Graswang valley gleaming far below. In the afternoon the two Brunnenkopfhäuser come into view, former royal hunting houses in a hollow just below the Brunnenkopf summit; the hut keeper serves dinner while chamois graze the meadows around the buildings at dusk.

Brunnenkopfhütte - Kenzenhütte
The big day, and the reason the trip carries a hard rating. From the hut the trail climbs through rock to the Klammspitze, where one short chain-secured step guards the face and the ridge narrows over the Große Klammspitz, at 1,924 m the roof of the crossing. Past the cross on the Grubenkopf the high traverse runs over the Hirschwang and the Hasentalkopf, then drops through the spray of the Kenzen waterfall to the lonely Kenzenhütte at 1,295 m, reachable by no road and all the better for it.

Kenzenhütte - Halblech
A quiet finale after three days of rock: the trail leaves the Kenzen valley through forest and open alp, passes the Mühlschartenkopf with views back to the whole ridge you crossed, and descends gently into the Weidach valley. Buching and Halblech spread out in the foothills, with the lakes of the Lech valley and, one valley over, the towers of Neuschwanstein. Bus RVA 73 from Halblech carries you back to Oberammergau or on to Füssen.
