Three days through the North Eifel
The Eifelsteig is the long-distance trail from Kornelimünster near Aachen to Trier: 313 kilometres in fifteen stages through the Eifel. This route covers the first three stages, from Kornelimünster to Einruhr, 55.9 kilometres in total. From the Netherlands you are at the start in about two and a half hours.
The first day runs from the abbey church of Kornelimünster through fields and woods to Roetgen, with the first climbs of the Eifel. The second crosses the woods and stream valleys around the Perlenbachtal, a narrow valley that turns yellow with wild daffodils in spring, and ends in Monschau: half-timbered houses, a castle above the town and the Rur running through the centre. The third is the longest and runs through the Rur valley, with viewpoints high above the river and the village of Dedenborn on the way, to Einruhr on the Obersee.
The landscape is forest, stream valley and open plateau, with climbs from just over three hundred to nearly a thousand metres a day. The paths are well maintained but can be muddy after rain; boots with a decent tread are worth it.
Practical. The route is waymarked with the Eifelsteig logo. Kornelimünster is served by bus from Aachen (Bushof), Einruhr by bus towards Schleiden and Kall, with train connections at Kall. The stages end in Roetgen, Monschau and Einruhr, all with hotels and guesthouses. Spring (daffodils) and September are the best months.
The Eifelsteig Nordeifel is split here into 3 stages of 14 to 25 km, 56 km in total, from Kornelimünster to Einruhr. The stages below are a sample itinerary: in the planner you put together your own days and choose where you sleep.

Kornelimünster - Roetgen
From the abbey church of Kornelimünster you walk through fields and woods into the hills, with the first climbs of the Eifel. At Roetgen you reach the edge of the village, with the outliers of the High Fens massif in the background.

Roetgen - Monschau
Through woods and along the edges of the Perlenbachtal, a narrow stream valley that turns yellow with wild daffodils in spring. The stage ends in Monschau, where the Rur runs between the half-timbered houses.

Monschau - Einruhr
The longest stage runs through the Rur valley, with viewpoints high above the river and the village of Dedenborn on the way. At Einruhr you reach the Obersee, the reservoir the Rur flows into.
